Lady in pink

Pink lady's slipper

She’s back!  I found a pink lady’s slipper in bloom today.  She was hiding under limbs of a drooping laurel.

Many years ago a friend spotted a number of these incredible flowers some distance up a slope from my house.  I was thrilled when I saw them.  Then I became somewhat complacent as I found more of them the next two years.  Alas, they disappeared last year and the year before.  I have been looking diligently again this year and found this one specimen.

Here’s a closer view of the slipper . . .

I bent down, “kissed” the flower, and inhaled.  A fragrance – very slight at the moment – and definitely a nice smell.  Isn’t she lovely?
